Through great feats of engineering and design, Japanese watchmakers Tokyo Flash have built the new Kisai Online to be so elaborate, it's virtually unintelligible. Although, admittedly, the timepiece becomes more scrutable each time you watch its instructional video. It operates as follows: the parallel lines running the circumference of the stainless steel band and casing are actually part of an inventive new typeface. On the colorful, LCD face of the watch, distorted numbers hide inside the jumble of brightly-colored stripes, which curve slightly where the crest of a "2" or the hook of a "9" would be. To further stand in the way of wandering eyes who covet the secret of what time it is, the numbers are only visible when they're facing the wearer, adding a fun and overly-cryptic twist.
The final product is exactly what it set out to be: futuristic and categorically unique. As telling time declines in relevance to watch design, the beguiling interface instead provides a temporary air of mystery and intrigue to the wearer, until you realize he's not a member of Daft Punk.
